Motivation for a Neutron-Antineutron Oscillation Search in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

چکیده
Grand unified theories generally predict the existence of baryon number nonconservation, manifesting itself in processes like proton decay and neutron-antineutron (n-n) oscillation. Experimental nonobservation of proton decay has led to the development of several experimental searches for n-n oscillations. To date, this phenomenon has never been detected, setting an experimental lower limit on the n-n oscillation time (τnn) as τnn > 1.3× 10 s at 90 % C.L. (according to Soudan 2). The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), a heavy water Čerenkov detector, can be used to increase the lower limit on τnn if an experimental search is developed. It can be seen that such an experiment in SNO could result in τnn > 2× 10 s at 90 % C.L., a sizable improvement over the current limit. As more data becomes available from SNO, this limit can be increased.

3Neutral Current Detectors for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
Current solar neutrino experiments indicate the possibility of neutrino oscillations. These flavour oscillations can be confirmed or refuted by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), a 1,000 tonne heavy water Čerenkov detector presently under construction. This detector will measure the 8B νe flux and energy spectrum via a pure charge current reaction, and independently the 8B total ν flux via...
متن کاملProgress in neutrino oscillation searches and their implications
Neutrino Oscillation, in which a given flavour of neutrino transforms into another is a powerful tool for probing small neutrino masses. The intrinsic neutrino properties involved are neutrino mass squared difference ∆m and the mixing angle in vacuum θ. In this talk I will summarize the progress that we have achieved in our search for neutrino oscillation with special emphasis on the recent res...
متن کاملConstraints on Neutrino Mixing Parameters with the SNO data
This paper reviews the constraints imposed on the solar neutrino mixing parameters by data collected by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). The SNO multivariate analysis is reviewed. The global solar neutrino analysis is emphasized in terms of matter-enhanced oscillation of two active flavors. An outline of how SNO uses the data to produce oscillation contour plots and how to include the re...
متن کاملSearch for Neutron-Antineutron Oscillations Using Multiprong Events in Soudan 2
We have searched for neutron-antineutron oscillations using the 5.56 fiducial kiloton-year exposure of the Soudan 2 iron tracking calorimeter. We require candidate nn occurrences to have ≥ 4 prongs (tracks and showers) and to have kinematics compatible with nN annihilation within a nucleus. We observe five candidate events, with an estimated background from atmospheric neutrino and cosmic ray i...
متن کاملThe Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a second-generation water Cherenkov detector designed to determine whether the currently observed solar neutrino de"cit is a result of neutrino oscillations. The detector is unique in its use of D 2 O as a detection medium, permitting it to make a solar model-independent test of the neutrino oscillation hypothesis by comparison of the chargedand neutral-curre...
